چکیده

We deal here with colorings of the pair (µ + , µ), when µ is a strong limit and singular cardinal. We show that there exists a coloring c, with no refinement. It follows, that the properties of identities of (µ + , µ) when µ is singular, differ in an essential way from the case of regular µ.

Approachability at the second successor of a singular cardinal

We prove that if μ is a regular cardinal and P is a μ-centered forcing poset, then P forces that (I[μ++])V generates I[μ++] modulo clubs. Using this result, we construct models in which the approachability property fails at the successor of a singular cardinal. We also construct models in which the properties of being internally club and internally approachable are distinct for sets of size the...

On Two Problems of Erdős and Hechler: New Methods in Singular Madness

For an infinite cardinal μ, MAD(μ) denotes the set of all cardinalities of nontrivial maximal almost disjoint families over μ. Erdős and Hechler proved in [7] the consistency of μ ∈ MAD(μ) for a singular cardinal μ and asked if it was ever possible for a singular μ that μ / ∈ MAD(μ), and also whether 2 μ < μ =⇒ μ ∈ MAD(μ) for every singular cardinal μ. We introduce a new method for controlling ...

Review on Todd Eisworth’s Chapter for the Handbook of Set Theory: “successors of Singular Cardinals”

This chapter offers a comprehensive and lucid exposition of the questions and techniques involved in the study of combinatorics of successors of singular cardinals. What is so special about successors of singular cardinals? They are successor cardinals, but are also similar to inaccessible cardinals, in the sense that there is no maximal regular cardinal below them, meaning for instance that th...

2 9 N ov 1 99 9 The number of L ∞ κ - equivalent non - isomorphic models for κ weakly compact

For a cardinal κ and a model M of cardinality κ let No(M) denote the number of non-isomorphic models of cardinality κ which are L∞κ-equivalent to M. In [She82] Shelah established that when κ is a weakly compact cardinal and μ ≤ κ is a nonzero cardinal, there exists a model M of cardinality κ with No(M) = μ. We prove here that if κ is a weakly compact cardinal, the question of the possible value...

ON IDEALIZED VERSIONS OF Pr 1 ( μ

We obtain an improvement of some coloring theorems from [1], [6], and [2] for the case where the singular cardinal in question has countable cofinality. As a corollary, we obtain an “idealized” version of the combinatorial principle Pr1(μ, μ+, μ+, cf(μ)) that maximizes the indecomposability of the associated ideal.
